Joanna Ortyl is a Professor in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology at Cracow University of Technology (Poland). She is also a CEO and Co-owner of Photo HiTech Ltd. (Cracow, Poland), which is specialized in the development and production of one component cationic photoinitiators working in visible light since 2013. She received her PhD degree in Chemistry (speciality Photochemistry) in 2012 from Cracow University of Technology. She worked as a post-doctoral researcher under Prof. Dr Thomas Jüstel at Müenster University of Applied Sciences in the Institute for Optical Technologies (Germany). She also completed a Master of Business Economics (MBE) course at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley (USA). She worked as a Visiting Professor in Prof.Jacques Lalevée’s group in Institute de Science des Matériaux de Mulhouse in 2015, 2016, and 2019.
Joanna Ortyl has experience in managing and implementing scientific projects (she managed NCN, SONATA, OPUS, OPUS LAP projects), NCBIR projects e.g.: LIDER, TANGO 2, FNP projects (VENTURES , RETURNS, TEAM TECH). She participated as a partner in projects with industry e.g.: in consortium with SYNTHOS S.A. in the INNOCHEM-NCBiR project. She participated in an international project within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action in Horizon. She is a graduate of the Top 500 Innovators Science-Management-Commercialization programme, where she attended the MBA course at the University of California, Berkeley. She is also a graduate of the Pioneer School (PFR) programme where she took courses in building investor relations.
Her research is always based on organic chemistry, photochemistry of small molecules as well as photochemistry of polymerization processes but always are correlated with practical application. For years, she has been linking the world of science with the world of business, as she has many years of experience in setting up spin-off and spin-out companies. Additionally, she has participated in many acceleration processes of technologies she has developed, including KPT SCALE-up in cooperation with Grupa AZOTY S.A. As a scientist, she is also a recognised expert in the field of photochemistry and is the author of numerous publications (103 publications, Hirsch index value 31, source Scopus, as at 04.02.2025) and the author of numerous patent applications (52 patents, source UPRP e-search engine, as at 04.02.2025).
